Benzyl Benzoate:
Dr.Hauschka cosmetics contain no synthetic chemical preservatives. The products are made more stable by adding small amounts of alcohol or by the use of natural essential oils. (The alcohol content in our Moisturising Day Cream, for example, is less than 10%. This is about the same as that of a light red wine.) The alcohol is also used to extract as many as possible of the valuable constituents from the plants used.
By nature, the essential oils which lend our products their frangrance are mixtures of individual substances - sometimes hundreds of them. The benzyl benzoate listed among the ingredients on the label of the Regenerating Day Cream is an aroma substance found in ylang-ylang oil, for instance. We do not use pure benzyl benzoate for our formulations; it is just a component of the natural essetial oils in the product.

The amount of this substance contained in the Regenerating Day Cream is very small. But declarable fragrances have to be stated on the label even if the amount contained in the end product is as little as 0.001%. Therefore it has to be listed among other natural fragrances as part of the INCI declaration. This information is included solely for allergy-sufferes who could possibly have an allergic reaction to one of these fragrances. In itself, benzyl benzoate is not classed as a carcinogen; it is completely harmless in these tiny concentrations.
